Watercone CARE Project |
|
In January 2004, together with CARE, the Watercone team provided 100 Watercones for a fisherman‘s hamlet on the coast of Yemen.
Ten Watercones each were supplied to ten fishermen's families which typically consisted of three to four adults and five to six children. For generations, the Yemenite fishermen have have struggled for every drop of drinking water.
With a set number of Watercones per family, the Watercone‘s viability was tested in the real daily life of a developing country community. This field testing continued through March 2004 when even during Winter, temperatures were already reaching 30 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit) and full daylight sun was available for roughly 9 hours per day.
Those involved with the project were: CARE Germany, Bayer AG, Stephan Augustin (the inventor of the Watercone concept), Zeltec Distributions GmbH (producer of the prototypes at the time and a financial supporter) and the Hans-Sauer-Foundation from Munich. CARE Germany is the German office of CARE USA, one the 3 largest aid and relief organizations in the world. CARE Germany provided a German project expert on location who had been living in Yemen for years and was on another project, hence enabling him to handle the Watercone project as well. Also involved from CARE Germany was the Program Officer Africa / Middle East who had numerous years of experience on the field in Yemen; he also supplied a top-grade, accredited student/ scientist on location full-time who had an opportunity to write a paper on the pilot project and accompanied it every day for long hours. Bayer AG, one of the world‘s largest pharmaceutical and chemical corporations provided the Watercone material and worldwide PR power for the pilot project.
